On Tuesday night, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said in an Instagram live session that she had a “very close encounter” on January 6th during the US Capitol riots. It was so severe that AOC feared for her life, saying that she thought she “was going to die”.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was almost killed in the US Capitol riots
AOC did not “disclose the full details” of the encounter that she had to face during the attempted coup due to security reasons. However, she did say that the encounter was “traumatizing” for her:
I did not know if I was going to make it to the end of that day alive.
AOC further revealed that there were other members of the house too who were almost assassinated! She said:
Wednesday was an extremely traumatizing event. And it was not an exaggeration to say that many members of the House were nearly assassinated.
Furthermore, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also said that she “didn’t feel safe around other members of Congress”. This is because she believes there were colleagues and fellow representatives “who would create opportunities to allow [her] to be hurt, kidnapped, etc”. AOC continued:
I myself did not even feel safe going to that extraction point because there were QAnons and white supremacists sympathizers and, frankly, white supremacist members of Congress in that extraction point who I know and who I had felt would disclose my location.
AOC also praised the Capitol police officers, especially officers of color. But, she also mentioned that some officers committed “acts of betrayal”, saying:
To run in the Capitol and not know if an officer is there to help you or to harm you is also quite traumatizing.
Other Dem. Leaders agree with her
AOC was not present in the Capitol on Tuesday, when when the House voted to ask Vice-President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th amendment. They wanted him to do so to remove Donald Trump from office for instigating the Capitol riots. Despite her absence, she still voted through a proxy.
So far, the police have also made dozens of arrests of the Trump supporters involved in the storming of the US Capitol. A total of 5 people died as a result of the riots in the US Capitol riots, including a police officer. The people involved in the mob had planned the insurrection and was more than a violent mob gone wild. And there are Democratic leaders other than AOC who back her claims that there’s more to it. That includes the Congresswoman from Massachusettes, Ayanna Pressley, who told the Globe:
Being a Black woman and feeling unsafe is not new. The experiences of Wednesday were harrowing and unfortunately very familiar in the deepest and most ancestral way.
And her chief of staff Sarah Groh explained that the security system in her office had been manipulated without any explanation. She said:
Every panic button in my office had been torn out – the whole unit.
AOC also called out Republican Senators for fanning the flames
Furthermore, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also called out Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley who tried to push the Senate to overturn the 2020 US elections result. AOC believed they acted that way to boost their chance of running for the White House in 2024, saying:
You do not belong in the United States Senate. Let me give you a sneak peek: You will never be president. You will never command the respect of this country, never. Never. And you should resign.
