Authorities release name of driver killed in fiery crash near Fairbanks Ranch County Club

The county Medical Examiner’s Office has released the name of a driver who died last week when his sports car crashed and caught fire near the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.

David Van Vielt, 27, was headed west on San Dieguito Road about 12:30 p.m. Nov. 17, when he drove across double yellow lines in an attempt to pass other vehicles on the two-lane, winding road, according to police and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Van Vielt’s 2018 McLaren 570S side-swiped another westbound vehicle.

He then crashed into an eastbound vehicle, causing the McLaren to spin, police said. Another eastbound vehicle — a box truck — T-boned the sports car, causing it to burst into flames.

Van Vielt, a San Diego resident, became trapped in the car and died in the wreckage.
