Coronation Street actor Daniel Brocklebank has opened up about the difficulties the cast faced when it came to filming more romantic scenes while maintaining a two-metre distance
Coronation Street star Daniel Brocklebank has revealed the difficulties of filming love scenes when staying two metres apart – saying the cast have got good at “eye sex” to give them impression things are getting heated.
The actor, who plays gay vicar Billy Mayhew, is about to receive a shock proposal from boyfriend Todd Grimshaw. But he says showing the couple’s passionate side on the cobbles has been hard.
Daniel, 41, said: “He’s come back into the show, we’ve had a whole relationship, got engaged, all at a bloody two-metre distance. We’re now so good at eye sex it’s unreal!
“Todd and Billy’s relationship has always felt very hot and passionate and fun. There are things I didn’t even know I could do with my eyes. Especially with a mask on, all you’ve got are your eyes. Now I’ve got skills!”
Daniel, who has played vicar Billy for seven years, also admitted that he gets abuse in the street over his on- screen romance with scheming Todd (Gareth Pierce), who broke up Billy’s previous relationship with Paul Foreman (Peter Ash).
Daniel, who is single in real life after splitting with boyfriend of two years, former Mr Gay UK Stuart Hatton Jr, added: “The s**t I get in the street from people over this is unreal.
“When I’m out walking the dog I get: ‘you should have chosen Paul, you idiot!’ or: ‘I can’t believe you can’t see what’s going on!’ I’m like: ‘I don’t write it, I just say it!’
“I also get people saying: ‘just don’t bother with either of them. For Christ’s sake there are enough gays in Manchester, why does it have to be those two?’
“I wish my love life was nearly as interesting! He’s got men throwing themselves at him – great!”
As Paul warns Billy that he’ll live to regret choosing Todd and Todd then receives an anonymous letter warning him his lies will come out, it’s only a matter of time before Todd’s behaviour is exposed and Billy’s world comes crashing down.
Daniel said: “Billy can’t see it, so I’ve had to play dumb for the last few months, not noticing things that are going on.
“I get tweets from people saying: ‘when is he going to get found out?’ Obviously within soapland you have to build it up to knock it down and I’m looking forward to all of that unravelling and airing.”
