MELBOURNE COUP: Demons president set to step down immediately

7NEWS understands Kate Roffey will become Melbourne Football club’s new president.

Roffey will be the club’s first female President.

Current Melbourne president Glenn Bartlett will step down before the Demons clash against Geelong on Sunday afternoon.

Bartlett’s announcement is a surprise, given Bartlett strongly advocated for the appointment of his preferred directors, writing directly to Members opposing Peter Lawrence as director in January.

It was widely thought Bartlett would seek re-election. The Demons are also undefeated.

Melbourne won’t comment, but this column understands the Melbourne board has decided on Roffey, currently Melbourne’s Vice President. The club is expected to confirm Roffey’s appointment in the coming days.

Roffey currently has a senior position with Wyndham City Council, and played a major role for Tennis Australia in the redevelopment of Melbourne Park.

Roffey also heads up Melbourne’s facilities working group.

The Club is trying to locate an appropriate site for major new headquarters, integrating the football and commercial departments. It’s understood their preferred site is within the Melbourne Park precinct.

7NEWS will have more details at 6pm, and on this afternoon’s game live and free on Channel 7.
