Pep Guardiola believes Chelsea have appointed an ‘exceptional manager’ in Thomas Tuchel.

Following Frank Lampard’s sacking earlier this week, Tuchel has been named as Chelsea’s new manager and the 47-year-old took charge of his first training session on Tuesday evening.

During his time at Bayern Munich, Guardiola came up against Tuchel who has managed both Mainz and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

Tuchel ran Guardiola close in the Bundesliga title race as his Dortmund side finished 10 points behind Bayern in the 2015-16 season.

And in that same season, Tuchel’s Dortmund narrowly lost the DFB-Pokal final on penalties to Guardiola’s Bayern.

Tuchel will now face Guardiola once again when Chelsea face Manchester City and the Spaniard is confident that the German will be a hit at Stamford Bridge.

‘Welcome. He’s an exceptional manager,’ said Guardiola.

‘I’m pretty sure he will have success. Happy to see him here in this country.

‘When I was at Bayern Munich I played against him at Mainz.

‘At the last season at Dortmund he did an incredible job, the way Dortmund played was outstanding. We fought a lot as Bayern Munich to win that title.

‘He’s a friend of mine and I’m happy to see him.’

Speaking about Lampard’s exit earlier this week, Guardiola said: ‘People talk about projects and ideas. They don’t exist.

‘You have to win or you will be replaced.

‘I respect the decision by Chelsea, but I hope to see Frank soon and go to a restaurant with him when lockdown is finished.’
