Ono Kine Grindz, the small Hawaiian shop and restaurant open since 2010, is a goldmine for island culinary treasures like ahi tuna poke and char siu (BBQ) pork.
Owners Guy Roeseler and David Lau offer other wonderful traditional dishes. One is Spam musubi, a sushi roll of purple sticky rice, a soy-based sauce and the lunch meat product in a seaweed wrapper.
My go-tos here are plate meals – the ramen-like saimin, a soup made of broth flavored with hondashi (a fish-flavored seasoning mix), fresh noodles, char siu chicken, egg and shrimp dumpling; and the laulau plate, featuring pork belly and butterfish wrapped in a steamed taro leaf served with macaroni salad, kimchi, Kalua pig and rice.
