Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are two illnesses that collectively are known as IBD that is inflammatory bowel disease. The word inflammation means “being set on fire.” Inflammation is a defensive response, limited to a small area, which happens when tissue is injured or destroyed. Its function is to separate, weaken, or destroy a harmful agent.
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are considered by some experts in the field as merely two forms of the same disease but there are differences. Crohn’s disease can occur anywhere from the mouth to the anus although most commonly it occurs at the end of the ileum and the beginning of the colon. This applies to forty-five percent of Crohn’s disease sufferers.
There are also differences between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis as to what is actually inflamed. In Crohn’s disease, it is the whole depth of the bowel wall, from the inner lining all the way through the muscle levels to the outer lining. Crohn’s disease causes enlargement of the mesentery. This is a fan-shaped piece of tissue that joins the small intestine to the back wall of the stomach and includes the central intestinal blood vessels and lymph glands.
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both sometimes known by different names. Crohn’s disease may be called ileitis, terminal ileitis. It is called terminal, not that it is a terminal illness but in reference to the terminus which is the end of the ileum. Crohn’s disease is also known as regional enteritis, regional ileitis, granulomatous colitis, ileitis, enteritis, and Crohn’s disease of the ileum, colon, stomach, duodenum or jejunum. Ulcerative colitis is also, because of its unknown cause, called idiopathic ulcerative colitis and nonspecific ulcerative colitis.
A lot is known about IBD but as mentioned above, we don’t know what causes it. You may be lucky enough not to be suffering from IBD, Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis but do you know what bowel health means? Constipation is frequently referred to as the cause of numerous severe physical health problems. Do you know what a normal bowel movement means? Probably your answer is, like most, having one bowel passage a day measures not being constipated. This is not so and would mean carrying around five to ten pounds of fermenting food in your lower bowel. The bowel then either tries to relieve the irritant quickly causing diarrhea or puts a halt on the intestines to stop them from further producing which causes constipation and additional health problems.
The root of the cause of constipation and poor bowel health is an unhealthy lifestyle, no exercise, and fragile internal and external muscles of the stomach and lack of sufficient water. It is imperative to drink eight to ten glasses of purified or bottled water daily.
After water bowel health relies on raw fresh fruits and vegetables and plenty of fiber to promote healthy elimination. Lots of salads are an excellent idea. Supplement daily with flaxseeds and psyllium husks. The muscles of the intestinal tract may become slack and displaced if the B complex vitamins are not abundant in the diet so include them in your diet daily.
For bowel health try to have a bowel movement soon after getting up and one within an hour following each meal, the output should be the same intake. When a regular pattern of bowel evacuation is established many of your physical problems will disappear.
