Google has issued an update for a worrying bug in its hugely-successful Chrome web browser. And this security flaw is a zero-day, which means that cyber criminals are already actively exploiting the glitch for their own gains – so you’ll want to get the latest patch installed fast.

Google is holding its cards close to its chest on this one. The Mountain View-based company hasn’t revealed any information about the bug in its changelog around the latest update.

That suggests Google is worried about sharing too much information, which could allow more cyber crooks to exploit the glitch before users have a chance to install the fix. Chrome is used by almost 70 percent of all desktop users worldwide, so there’s a hefty responsibility on its shoulders to keep the majority of desktop users safe from glitches.

In the notification about the glitch, Google says: “Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed.”

If cyber criminals know bad actors have already managed to use the exploit to work on Chrome browsers across the globe, there is more incentive to try to reverse-engineer the hack. That’s something Google will be intensely aware of – so we might have to wait a few months before the US firm reveals more details about what is going on under the bonnet.

To make sure your machine isn’t vulnerable to this latest threat, you’ll want to update to the latest version as soon as possible.

If you’re using Windows, macOS or Linux, check the version of your Chrome browser is 80.0.3987.122. This is the version of the app with the zero-day flaw safely sutured.

Google will be rolling out the update over the coming weeks. If you’re keen to get the issue patched as soon as possible, you can kickstart the update early by visiting this webpage.
